Russia Invades Ukraine? It’s On!

Looks like my predictions from a few days ago have come true, and just at the right time. Explosions are being heard in various cities across Ukraine, including the capital Kiev. So far Russia has signalled a clear intent to enter the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts for “peacekeeping” purposes, but I think Russia’s president Putin intends to occupy the entire country. Ignorance of the strength of Russia’s military capacities in the West (and probably Ukraine) is goading many Ukranians to their doom, as I have observe multiple stories over the past few days in the ABC and elsewhere praising random grandmas and other hapless civilians being trained in small-arms weapons for the purposes of fighting the invasion. It is sad to say that most of these people, if they are ever unlucky enough to “see” combat, will be incinerated by Russian weapons’ systems miles away. Most casualties in modern major state wars result from explosives, artillery and rocketry; the idea that there is going to be meaningful rifle to rifle, building to building combat here is a fantasy of a media that gets its ideas on contemporary warfare and maneuver from real time strategy games, if even that.

EZFKA’s placeholder managers have leapt at the opportunity to pretend they matter on the global stage, announcing some meaningless sanctions from Australia on Russia. I wonder what this could mean? What does Australia possibly produce that Russia doesn’t also have in abundance that Russia needs for anything? The same can be said for a lot of other countries sanction threats, which I don’t think will matter all that much to Russia. Mostly what will will result from these sanctions and Ukraine’s foolish intransigence on NATO is more expensive prices at the bowser, even more inflated costs of living and even costs of food (see: ammonium nitrate, for one).

So let’s discuss! What will the outcomes here be? Will it go any further or will Russia just stop at the breakaway republics? I don’t think it will, and I was right before. Are you planning on trading this? What’s your angle?

Chinese Astroturfer

You made some spot on predictions.

Australia has insulted and humiliated me like a negro under apartheid since COVID started, so I can only cheer on Russia and hope for a smooth transition of power with few lives lost. Certainly Russia will have a difficult time causing the scale of deaths we saw in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan.

Not only under COVID have I been insulted and humiliated but over the past decade or so the rhetoric against white Australians and white history has stepped up a notch. Don’t expect me to fight for or defend this country…EVER!

No doubt this leads to China taking Taiwan like taking candy from a baby in the years to come.

A fly in your ointment

I hate to inform you that being treated as a negro under apartheid is not a bad proposition comparing to being treated as a negro in the most developed country in the world. Probably even by today’s metrics (or should I say “yardics”?).
But it is a digression, I agree to what you wanted to say.
I dare say that there is likelihood that only silly lives will be lost, be it silly by the owner of the said life or by an order of a silly general. In any way, Zelenski is not that stupid, so if another coup changes that, the deaths may change too. Not that the biggest bully did not intervene in the past to protect a good war from a bad peace…

Chinese Astroturfer

Looks like it will be under Russia control by next week or maybe the weekend.

If you look at live cams of Kiev though it all seems like business and usual though.

Ramjet

Southern and Eastern Ukraine has large Russian communities, so there will be little resistance there.

A fly in your ointment

What is opposite from “resistance”?

One should gather that peace keeping forces are welcome in any country.

Martin Donohoe

Inductance?

A fly in your ointment

Not a bad suggestion, but that would be more for overly simplified reverse of impedance…

In this case I seek word for opposite of military ‘resistance’ (aka french translation from english: “dropping rifles”)

I am not sure that the rug pull angle appeals to me intuitively.

I don’t think a Taiwan invasion is on the cards though

A fly in your ointment

If all the foreign meddlers left Taiwan there would be peace and in 50-100 years these would become one country. Money bit, tends to bond unbondable things. ROC has a lot to lose from war. PRC too. OTOH, the third side…

A fly in your ointment

The bit Pyoutin said is that denazification if Ukraina is required for the peace keeping forces to pull out.
Technically there is no break up of Ukraina as yet if the soft power occupied part of Ukraina becomes free and the country can reunify.
The untold (in the west) history of Bosnia/Herzegovina model cannot work any more… ruskies would be overly stupid to allow it

Ramjet

The PM of EZFKA getting up and talking about sanctions with Russia is meaningless. Australia and Russia are commodity exporters and we don’t really sell to each other. Russia’s main customer is Europe and Putin just has to turn the tap off and Europe freezes, so gas won’t form part of sanctions. In which case, the sanctions will be irrelevant.

Really depends on how relevant it is to the average politically disengaged EZFKA unit. Bet most wouldn’t be able to identify Ukraine on a map.

The90kwbeast

Perhaps but surely anything not covid related on the newscycle is a win at this point for Scomo though

Gouda

Perhaps, but I’d expect this Ukraine invasion to be over fairly quickly. On the domestic front high, cost of living pressures are already biting – fuel prices and food staples have already risen which will be with us for a longer period.

LSWCHP

Whule your prediction was spot on, your view that infantry ground combat has been superseded by artillery is wrong. You can’t seize and hold ground with artillery.

Google for “The role of the infantry” for further details. Unless the Ukes all surrender en masse there will undoubtedly be rifle to rifle and building to building combat galore, as there has been in that area for almost a decade now, something most people aren’t aware of.

Some good footage of rifle and building action from Ukraine circa 2015….

https://www.military.com/video/operations-and-strategy/battles/ukraine-war-footage/4526278616001

A fly in your ointment

Perhaps because most will not see this as occupation but rather as something else?

This bit is incomprehensible within westworld’s syndicated media

Peachy

Lswchp, im really hanging out for your thoughts about what a ground invasion might look like in 2022…

from your above post I get the sense that infantry combat is infantry combat and despite the advances in tech, etc, fundamentally even blokes with WW2 level equipment could put up a good fight against “modern” infantrymen, if morale holds up and it descends to urban house-to-house warfare?

bjw678

I get the sense that infantry combat is infantry combat and despite the advances in tech, etc, fundamentally even blokes with WW2 level equipment could put up a good fight against “modern” infantrymen, if morale holds up and it descends to urban house-to-house warfare?

No way the locals hold back the might of the russian invasion. How you beat them is the same way the locals have beat virtually all the superpower invasions since WW2. Guerilla tactics, and a battle of attrition and atrocities.
If you get in a stand up fight with the russians they will bomb or shell you into oblivion.

bjw678

They may not have the heart given the close ties to russia but that is a separate question.

Not sure the vietnamese were tough as nails mountain men either. Even the irish pulled it off in a more gentlemanly way.
Iraq, same result.

plaguerat

Not sure the vietnamese were tough as nails mountain men either

Yeah, but spending your whole life working in a paddy field, and living on a bowl of rice a day does tend to toughen you up a bit 🙂

bjw678

fundamentally even blokes with WW2 level equipment could put up a good fight against “modern” infantrymen, if morale holds up and it descends to urban house-to-house warfare?

I’d also add that training and motivation count for far more than the equipment carried.
Some interesting viewing:
Shooting to kill – how many men can do this?

bjw678

And if you are a glutton for punishment and have an hour to spare:
Do better guns improve fighting effectiveness?

LSWCHP

Western armies are currently focussed on diversity and transgenderism and other such nonsense.

The Russians are not, and they will want to get it it done, and will use whatever force is required. They won’t be concerned about Rules of Engagement, collateral damage or any of that. The will squash the Ukranians like bugs.

There’s an awful lot of PR in the MSM about the plucky Ukranians fighting the Russians to a standstill, inflicting vast casualties etc. This is nonsense. I think it will all be over in a week or so.

The question then is whether Putin will take advantage of Biden’s senility and EU weakness to have a shot at some NATO turf to demonstrate that NATO is a house of cards and their pact is worthless.

Regarding infantry combat, very little has changed in essence since WW2. The common infantry rifles in the region are direct descendants of the AK47, which was invented in 1947. Same for the automatic weapons, clothing, webbing, small unit tactics etc. The people who fought at Stalingrad and Berlin and all points in between would be entirely familiar with what’s happening in Ukraine today.

Peachy

Thanks for expanding on this

At least this will end COVID talk in the media once and for all.

robert2013

Ukraine is a virutally landlocked nation with a weak economy and a not very good military. Even if Russia takes it by conquest, it won’t matter much to the rest of the world. It’s probably better for the rest of the world if Russia does take over since the fracas over gas pipelines will be firmly resolved. Markets are overreacting. Buy the dip.

Chinese Astroturfer

I think this has a while to play out. There’s going to be pockets of resistance. Russia starts losing troops it will become tit for tat.

bjw678

The vietnamese and the afghanis twice over would beg to differ on that particular assertion. In fact virtually all post WW2 combat has been waged and usually won by irregulars. The deciding factor will be whether the ukrainians actually care about the russians being there or not, and how much if they do.
A superpower can certainly occupy territory with enough soldiers but holding it against the will of the local people for any length of time is a much harder proposition.

robert2013

plaguerat

The vietnamese and the afghanis twice over would beg to differ on that particular assertion

The Vietnamese and Afghans had two things in common:

1. Given their poor standard of living and outlook for the future, they had nothing to lose by taking up arms to fight, and

2. They were fighting an enemy that was clearly a foreign invader attempting to conquer them and introduce a cultural and governance system totally unlike their traditional and historical background.

These two strong motivational factors do not appear to be evident in Ukraine.

Additionally, their enemies in both instances were from distant lands and faced substantial logistic challenges in maintaining their campaigns, and significant and growing hostility towards the wars within their own populations.

Logistics is not an issue for the Russians in Ukraine, and to date there appears to be no noticeable pushback from the Russian population at home.

bjw678

Not going to argue with any of that, but it also has nothing to do with what I was responding to.

Russian peace mission is important from one perspective that no one seems to dare to say. It marks both an end and a beginning. End of unipolar world and a beginning of what will become 3.67 polar universe.
It is pretty much the biggest event since the disbanding of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance on the 1. July 1991.

Now that the new pole has risen to its level and an intervention precedent is made, the resident bully will have to fight for its turf. I just hope that the things don’t begin to evolve towards the resident bully demise at a speed that will see it resorting to a scorched earth.
The world seems to be peaceful proportionally to the number of poles on the influence map.

A good explanation by Stan Grant at ABC (unbelievable, eh?):

Russia’s Ukraine invasion is not just about borders or power. For Putin, it’s about identity

This is the sort of war the West does not know how to fight.

It is not just about territory, borders, resources, or power. It is existential — it is about identity.

Vladimir Putin has made it clear Ukraine is part of the soul of Russia. And he is prepared to crush the souls of Ukrainians to achieve his ends.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-02-25/russia-ukraine-invasion-borders-power-vladimir-putin-identity/100858372

I’m pretty sure that Stewie would agree with Grants’ analysis of western society 🙂

Luke B

The MSM narrative is basically that Putin is a psycho who wants Ukraine back into an expanded Soviet empire.

The Grayzone and other “non corporate” media have pointed out that since the coup in 2014, the Ukrainian army got co opted by ultra nationalist forces including unabashed neo Nazis. The Donbass regions claimed their own sovereignty and we’re shelled by these forces for not being “real” Ukrainians and were asking for Russian help. Allegedly some 10,000 locals died at the hands of these forces.

The recent talks about Ukraine coming into NATO were a red line for Putin. Also, in the intervening 8 years, USA, France and UK sent USD$600 million worth of weapons into the Ukraine, and this apparently tipped Putin into action.

The claim from Russian state press and announcements is that the peoples of Donbass were ignored by the west, as was Putin’s demands for no NATO expansion. With Nord stream 2 complete, the hashed withdrawal of US from Afghanistan and the winter Olympics finished, it was “time” to test Europe and NATO and to “make a point.”

Not condoning or condemning anything, this is the alt perspective I have seen.

Coming

So do the people of Ukraine want to be part of Russia ?

or the current government is a puppet / not democratically representative

that would seem to me to be the key moral question

Luke B

It’s hard to say definitively… Putin has said he has no intentions of seizing control of Ukraine and he wants “neutrality” from them in return.

Their claimed incursion is to strike military sites only. 2/3 of Ukraine can speak Russian and 1/7 of their population are natively Russian…

Zelensky has pronounced that Europe and NATO have abandoned him and they are.left to fight alone.

I think (and hope) the Russian mission is to seize all western supplied weapons, get Zelensky to concede and then return home having achieved their objectives.

Coming

Seems like that would be asking for trouble by Putin

he’s called the west’s bluff and gotten away with it

once

if he leaves after this , you could surely guarantee that anti Russian govt would sweep to power with bolstered western support

If he doesn’t want to reunite the Soviet state, he needs to at least install a puppet government and keep them militarily/intelligence backed/controlled I would think ?

Peachy

What you boys are suggesting are not mutually exclusive options.

having a short and successful campaign, then declaring victory and leaving while making sure that the next regime behaves like a client state seems like an attractive and elegant outcome.

the alternative of occupying or annexing territory exposes Russia to the risk of ongoing guerilla warfare and permanently brands Putin and Russia as an aggressor/occupier.

The Cuban Missile Crisis is a better example. USA did not want short range nuclear missiles in Cuba pointed at them, and were prepared to start a nuclear war over it. Ukraine (and Taiwan) will never be permitted to be armed.

You can be sure that USA and their allies will not dare push the point. Also the European countries have a lot more to lose if they were to seriously sanction Russia.

It would be very ballsy to actually use the nukes, the russians could tactical nuke the entire country without too much collateral damage to themselves, and quite possibly have a shiteload of chemical and biological stuff that could be used. That is a button that can’t be unpushed and I really doubt they would have pushed it if they had it, and they knew it hence why they gave them up.

That’s a good article. We have learned nothing from the last 2 years with regards to having redundancy in our systems, whether logistics, health or energy and not too much over reliance on 1 trade partner for anything.
The energy crisis that we are facing is entirely of our own creation.

canuckdownunder

This is comedy gold, ABC’s The Drum talking about the problem of disinfornation. What a wankfest, they’re saying you have to go to credible sources like the ABC, BBC, and CNN 😂

Ramjet

Does anyone watch The Drum? I put it in the bucket of things like Q&A: the unwatchable category.

Putin realises that it existential for Russia. If he doesn’t take control of it now he will be only postponing the hardship from a weaker position.

Gosh, it’s good to live in a democracy…..you know….freedom of speech, access to information….all that sort of stuff:

Australia suspends RT broadcast

Australia’s satellite operator, Foxtel, has notified RT on Saturday that it is suspending the channel’s broadcast distribution in Australia as part of its services “in view of concern about the situation in Ukraine.”

https://www.rt.com/russia/550700-australia-suspends-rt-broadcast/

I remember during one of the more heated moments of the Iranian situation that the same thing happened to the Iranian satellite channel “Press TV”.

Fortunately, RT is still available on Intelsat 19 (Ku band) and Asiasat 7 (C band), as well as RT.com on the ‘net (for now).

For those wanting comprehensive information on what’s happening in Ukraine, RT provides a reasonably warts-and-all coverage.

What is it that they say about the first casualty of war?

plaguerat

More fake news….looks like it’s endemic these days:

Moscow and Kiev issue update on Ukrainian border guards reported killed

The Russian military has claimed that Ukrainian border guards, whom Ukraine initially declared entirely slain, survived, while Kiev’s military concurred that it might indeed be the case.

Both countries’ armed forces on Saturday said that a group of Ukrainian border guards stationed on Zmeinyy (Snake) Island, located some 48km off Ukraine’s southern coast in the Black Sea, were captured by Russian forces. Russia says they were taken alive and unharmed to Sevastopol in Crimea.

However, the initial story allegedly went as follows: a group of 13 border guards on the island were confronted by a Russian warship on Thursday. The Russian ship ordered the group by radio to surrender, the Ukrainians replied “go f**k yourself,” and the Russian ship opened fire. After several hours of fighting, all the guards were killed.

https://www.rt.com/news/550717-snake-island-guards-surrendered/

LSWCHP

I’d be willing to bet the brave sapper who blew himself up on the bridge was actually shot while deserting or fell and hit his head something, and they dumped his body on the bridge and blew it to make a hero of him.

There’s a picture of an apartment building supposedly hit by an airstrike. There’s an identical pic from 2018 saying it had suffered a gas explosion. Etc etc….

plaguerat

And even though the Snake Island rebuttal was posted on RT yesterday, today we have this, posted only 47 minutes ago, on “our ABC”:

As Russian tanks roll in and bombs rain down, Ukrainians urge resistance on social media

Ukraine’s Interior Ministry posted a meme of a street sign reading “go f*** yourself”, a reference to the final words of defiant Ukrainian border guards killed by a Russian warship earlier this week.

The phrase has since been popularised on the Ukrainian internet, with Mr Zelenskyy announcing the 13 border guards would posthumously be named Heroes of Ukraine.

A fly in your ointment

Redux of the same-ole, just the subject changes. Waxing narrative etc

I am eager to see what happens to SWIFT, will it shitt where it eat.
Weaponising currency is one level but weaponising finance after a tantrum is a whole new game changer. Not because Ruskies will suffer, but because once that is on the table, no other country is safe (apart from just a handful of hard core sycophants). Perhaps this is the end game, encroachment by adoption of crypto… which should make one think twice if crypto is not just another tool, like Goggle

Love the smell of the multipolar world in the morning. There will be death and dead, but by far less in any other alternative where there are no moderators on the scene.

pnut5678

Yes the SWIFT action against Russia will set a precedent which might make some other countries ask is this worth the risk of being in the club.
It is the nuclear option which can only be used once against Russia and I’m surprised that they have used it. My guess is they want to collapse their own economies and will use the Russian bogey man as a scapegoat.
I’m happy that the globalists have been caught out by this. They can cram their one world government up their ass.

Chinese Astroturfer

It doesn’t matter. Russia has prepared for this day the US and its puppet states have been threatening to cut them off SWIFT since 2014. The threat was still there last year.

A fly in your ointment

It will matter from international perspective because once that horse bolts – it is gone, sooner or later.
>Every country with some semblance of sovereignty will think about time when the resident bully may see them in its cross-hair (a matter of time, history teaches us)
>Once the alternative method is established, voluntary monopoly has gone forever and the new solution need not be in a single or current reserve currency.

To me, it is an act of accelerated debasement of the reserve currency and one more shot in their own foot. Ukraina denazification mission will end, people will remember it less than the last plandemic, but swift has entered the metastasis phase….

In theory everything we know is just a gibberish no different from the time holly books were written as an attempt at documentation of events, I reality, accurate is something that is best described with prevailing techniques. From that premise, I genuinely am interested in where/which are bits that could not stand the prevailing scrutiny methods.
I’ve been offered once the Roman proverb about Jupiter and an ox but that is not an argument…

Stewie

Great article LSWCHP – pretty much 100% matches my own view on the situation.

Vaccinazi

There was that thing that existed before Putin’s intervention to denazify Ukraina and its puppet regime (serving you-know-who’s interests)…. some people may still remember it as some sort of flu like thingo that was so bad no one knew how bad it actually was, it was capable to make proven healthy sportsmen become enemy of the state, thus the nation, for not being inoculated against… sorry the name escapes me.

Anyway, apparently (from unverifiable data), this thing has a huge propensity to be very deadly, approximately 7 times more severe for humans whom are double or triple protected against it. UnProtected seem to bode the best to stave off the vicious virus.

The city’s name in English is Kiev, not Kyiv.

There is a class of people who enjoy nothing more than constantly altering their vocabulary to signal their conscientiousness and erudition. Although in this case it is to signal the person uttering it, is onboard with the Ukraine and its culture suddenly elevated to the point worthy of referring to it in its own language.

Honestly if it matter, with Melbourne’s sizeable Greek population should we be referring to Athens as Athenai? Or Rome as Roma? Heavens if we’re at it why aren’t we referring to Moscow as Moskva? Because presumably Russian culture isn’t suddenly worth signaling our erudition over.

Anglicized names are not a disrespect to the metropolis’s that we designate it – it isn’t a sign of superiority or the god awful cultural colonization that progressives always worry about. It is simply how you say the name in English.

Do you think the French signal their cultural simping by calling Londres London? Or the German’s get offended if you refer to them as Germans instead Deutsche.

You’re not expressings solidarity by calling it Kyiv, you’re simping the Globalists.

It’s Kiev.

I thought that KIEV was the name of the new Kia electric vehicle… KI-EV

Stewie

I see the trend of incorporating the phonetically correct pronunciation of whichever city or people, as spoken in that nations local language as pretentious virtue signaling.

The anglicized names for foriegn cities or people, isn’t a form of cultural appropriation, colonialism or cultural superiority – it is simply how you say the name in Enlish. Demanding that we refer to Bombay as Mumbai is nothing more than simping to MultiCulturalism and the globalist narrative.

You can tell where the interests of the Global elites lie, by their simping towards that particular culture. Come into our sphere of influence and we’ll allow you to use your own honorifics.

The “in’s” have their anglicized names replaced, while the “out’s” still endure the ignominy of cultural domination through the common use of their insulting angelized names.

…too bad that in our simping to China progressive wankers in the Media chose to change Peking to Beijing – Peking was way cooler, and all their simping ultimately came to nothing in the end anyhow.

Peachy

I mostly agree, Stew.

whats your take on the more subtle distinction between Calcutta and Kolkata?

Stewie

Arts student wankers signalling their class superiority by shifting the acceptable use of common language, orphaning and disempowering those who aren’t erudite enough to keep up.

Ee Zed Eff Kaye Ay

Kyiv is derived from the Ukrainian. Stop being a fuckwit!

Simp harder.

Honestly, it is nothing but precocious virtue signalling, and is on par with sending ‘thoughts and prayers’ in terms of pointless expressions of solidarity.

Pussies like you would be the first to call Melbourne Naarm if you thought it would it would get you onboard with the manufactured majority narrative.

Operational information as of 18:00 on February 27 regarding the Russian invasion
The Russian Federation continues to accumulate aviation equipment and intensify special forces on the territory of the Republic of Belarus.
More than 50 planes, 10 helicopters and 2 An-124 planes are concentrated at Machulishi airfield. Transport planes to Ukraine are constantly taking off from Baranovichi and Machulishche airfields.
The Belarusian command has brought some of its units into combat readiness.
Conducting an offensive operation in Ukraine, the Russian occupiers use methods of combat prohibited by international humanitarian law: seize social infrastructure, wear the uniform of the Ukrainian military, police and SES, sabotage special forces use ambulances and police cars stolen from doctors. ambulance stations; terrorists occupy children’s camps and schools, enemy artillery and MLRS are deployed on sports grounds.
Three ambulances with conditional markings of invaders were recently spotted in Kyiv. In the Genichesk district of the Kherson region, the Russian occupiers deployed MSTA-C artillery units in residential buildings. A column is moving in the direction of Makariv-Kyiv, and the enemy has placed children and women on the armored vehicles to cover them.
However, the moral and psychological condition of the occupying forces is low. Near Koryukivka in the Chernihiv region, conscripts of the Russian Armed Forces are ready to lay down their arms and surrender.
Hundreds of disabled armored vehicles and tanks have been abandoned all over Ukraine.
As of 18:00, the loss of enemy personnel amounted to about 4,500 people.
Destroyed and damaged aircraft – 27 units (to be specified), helicopters – 26 units, tanks – about 150, BBM – more than 700, guns – about 50, one SAM BEECH, four MLRS BM-21 Hail, 60 tanks, 2 UAV operational and tactical level, ships, boats – 2 units.
There will be more. The calculation is complicated by the high intensity of hostilities.

2 quotes…same source

“They wont do anything remotely like what happened in Grozny. The evidence thus far suggests that the Russians appear to have gone out of their way to be reasonably ‘nice’ if that can be said about an invading force of Russians”

“Even if Putin were to be shunted – and thats a long way off – the drivers of his attitudes and the interests of Russians wouldn’t change much. Indeed the concern would be what replaces him.”

So….who can credibly rule out a Grozny redux?

nato better be thinking on this
