Part 1
Muscling in on stagmal’s turf here….
There is a lot of ground to cover, so I will break this piece in a couple of parts. My information comes from a variety of sources, both Western MSM, Russian MSM (if available in English), independent blogs, and a variety of Telegram channels. For Russian side of the propaganda (and, let’s face it, it is all propaganda), one can read Intel Slava Z channel to save translating effort.
Military Action
Last few months, starting with the onset of rainy season in eastern Ukraine, the military actions have morphed in a number of local conflicts, with both Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and Russian Armed Forces (RAF) mostly fighting a positioning war. AFU was mostly defending and attempting counter-offensives, RAF engaged in artillery shelling of AFU positions and slowly advanced. Most prominent action was seen around Bakhmut/Soledar (Gift of Salt), Ugledar (Gift of Coal) and Svatovo. I find some of the literal translations of these towns fascinating for some reason.
No decisive offensive or counter-offensive measures were possible merely because that part of the world has three seasons: summer, winter, and mud. Mud started in September and has continued until recently, where the ground conditions made it impossible for the tanks / APVs to mount any sort of attack. With General Frost finally making an appearance, this will likely change.
Kherson
In early November, RAF withdrew from the right (western) bank of Dnipro River around Kherson and set up defence positions on the left (eastern) bank. This pullback was organised and quick, with no (or very limited) RAF losses. The withdrawal also provided an opportunity for the civilian population of Kherson to evacuate with the RAF, which many took advantage of. There were reports of the AFU going door-to-door n Kherson after it was liberated to find “collaborationists” and punish them. There were also videos of AFU soldiers taken prisoners, who were sent to the front lines directly from Kherson, so they could “redeem themselves with their blood”, without any training.
Engels
AFU had undertaken multiple drone attacks in Crimea, along the Russia-Ukraine border, and deep inside Russia’s territory. While most of these attacks were unsuccessful, the four drone strikes deep inside Russian territory made the world take notice. Three of these occurred in Engels, which is home to one of the strategic bomber military airbases in Russia.
Engels AFB is (was?) the sole operating location for Russia’s Tu-160 strategic bombers. It is also home for Tu-95 strategic bombers. There were recent reports that some of the assets have been transferred to a base in the Far East. These bombers, especially Tu-160, are an important part of a nuclear triad (air, missile, submarines) for Russian Federation. Since Engels is ~900km away from Ukraine, a natural question to ask is “how could the drones cover this much distance without being detected?” Unfortunately, I have not found a concrete answer to this, and cannot fully subscribe to any plausible theory that has been put out there. There are three major theories: a western drone supplied by the US/UK and guided by the US satellites, an old Soviet drone modernised by the US/UK and guided by the US satellites, or a drone that was launched in the vicinity of the military facilities by an AFU sabotage group. It is interesting to note that the latest Engels drone attack (26 December 2022) resulted in a loss of three RAF lives due to, as reported, shooting down the drone(s) in the immediate vicinity of the base. To me, this means that the drone(s) could have flown undetected at a low altitude, but after missing the first attack that occurred 3 weeks earlier, it seems improbable.
Bakhmut/Soledar
This front has seen a slow, tedious grind by Wagner Group (what some people call a mercenary army) against defending AFU forces. After AFU success in Kherson (and Kharkov and Kiev earlier in the year), Zelensky has been pressuring Zaluzhnyi (Commander-in-Chief of the AFU) to hold this position at all costs, so the West continues its support. The AFU appear to be losing this battle, with Wagner’s forces controlling a major portion of Soledar, and are fighting in the centre of Bakhmut. However, Zaluzhnyi has been throwing more and more cannon fodder on this front. This sector of the front has become known as “Bakhmut meat grinder”, with Western media acknowledging massive AFU losses here. Although it depends on what day you are reading the news.

As I type this, Zelensky came out with an announcement thanking all heroic defenders of Soledar, where Ukraine was able to win additional time to concentrate additional forces. Many are interpreting these words as an excuse to withdraw from Soledar.

RAF Drone/Missile Strikes
RAF continued to unleash massive drone and missile strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and select military facilities. However, it appears that the tactics have changed in the last few days.
If you recall, the initial multiple strikes started after a truck blew up on Crimea bridge back in October 2022, damaging it, but not significantly enough to prevent it from being used. The repairs are on-going, but both rail and road portions of the bridge were put back in service shortly after the initial blast. To retaliate, RAF started hitting key energy infrastructure across Ukraine, which resulted in power outages across the entire country, with restrictions on power supply continuing to date in many cities and towns.
RAF did not target many energy-producing assets (hydro, coal, etc.), as these are near impossible to repair once destroyed, but rather the distribution network. It needs to be said that Ukrainian power grid has been designed and built during Soviet era, and heavily relies on 750kVa transformers, which are not used in the Western grid. By taking a sufficient number of these out, RAF came close to shutting down Ukraine’s ability to distribute generated electricity. Things got bad enough that there was a network of “Points of Invincibility” set up across the country where people could get warm and charge up their devices. People in large population centres, like Kiev, were urged to leave cities and go stay with friends and relatives with access to water and heat. Warnings of “apocalypse” continued even as RAF attacks on critical infrastructure subsided.
No electricity also means that there is no water supply, as it has to be pumped (unless one has a well), which means that the pipes, if unused, will burst as soon as the temperature drops enough for the ground to freeze. This also means that bulk of rail network is dead, because it mainly uses electrical locomotives. However, alternative plans are being made: diesel and even steam.
In recent days, RAF appears to have changed its tactics, keeping whatever energy infrastructure that remains intact. Instead, RAF started fishing for remaining AFU air defence systems, and taking these out. Zelensky have been begging for additional air defence systems from the West, including Patriot missiles, but so far wasn’t successful. Having destroyed a lot of AFU’s old Soviet systems, RAF are striving for full air dominance, presumably, to continue air attacks on various targets with relative immunity. RAF is also striking targets within 100-km range from the frontlines.
There was some interesting discussion comparing cost of a RAF drone ($20K-$50K, depending on source) to a cost of a Patriot or other missile ($1M – $4M, depending on source).
“Firing a million-dollar missile at a $50,000 drone is a losing proposition,” said Mark Cancian, a retired Marine Corps reserves colonel and senior adviser at CSIS.
Mass Casualties, Mobilisations, Internal Politics & Propaganda
I have lumped a few subjects in here. A few bullet points to illustrate both sides of the propaganda effort. You decide for yourself which side you lean towards. To me, both tend to exaggerate own success and diminish own failure, but Ukraine looks more suspicious to me in the propaganda department.
AFU strike in Makeevka on New Year’s Day. AFU claim: over 400 dead. RAF claim: 89 dead, including one Lieutenant Colonel.
RAF retaliated a few days later in Kramatorsk. RAF claim: over 600 dead. AFU claim: nil.
Ursula von der Leyen: 100K AFU dead. Ukraine indignant, Ursula edits her statement to remove reference.
Ukraine claimed that Russia will mobilise additional 500,000 troops soon. Dates given were 5 January or 9 January, nothing so far. Putin stated that only half of the previous 300,000 were at the front lines, so new mobilisation was pointless.
Numerous videos on Telegram of the AFU “recruiters” passing out mobilisation notices anywhere they can: shops, night clubs, out on the street. Also using clever disguise tactics: ambulances or dressing up like Santa Claus. Lists of people that are supposedly avoiding draft are being posted in cities and towns across Ukraine. Allegedly, Ukraine needs another 150,000 recruits now, so they are ready for a spring offensive.
Next, two huge own goals that Ukraine scored in the recent months. First, de-facto ban of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is affiliated with Moscow (soon to be de-jure). Search of church buildings, criminal charges against priests. This is THE largest church in Ukraine, with some AFU soldiers recording videos addressing Zelensky against this initiative.
Second, Zelensky’s new media law, which is making him look like a dictator:
“The law expands the authority of Ukraine’s state broadcasting council, meaning that it will be able to regulate all media in Ukraine. Under previous legislation, enacted in 2019 under the Zelensky government, the council has the power to issue licenses, conduct inspections, and impose sanctions on television and radio companies, Ukra News reported.”
In Russia, there are its own propaganda problems. First of all, since the beginning of the Special Military Operation (SMO), the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman, Lieutenant General Konashenkov, have been copping it. The delivery is dull, some information has not been forthcoming, or announced later than Ukrainian side (e.g. prisoner swap numbers), and the announced losses are being questioned. I have seen an infographic, where RAF, according to Konashenkov, destroyed 24 HIMARS systems compared to 18 systems supplied to AFU. Same with AFU airframes – RAF seem to be shooting down SU and MIG fighters, while AFU should have run out of them a few months back.
Of course, there are plausible reasons for the discrepancy in numbers, but Russian MoD is notoriously secretive. This only exacerbates sense of mistrust Russians tend to have towards its government, given the history of, say, last 100 years. Konashenkov is no Baghdad Bob, yet, but he could stand some polishing of his image.
Next, Putin’s use of “war” as a reference to the SMO in Ukraine. This was the first time Putin referred to the conflict as “war”. This really threw the entire Russian blogosphere (and the West) for a spin. Especially since Russia adopted a law in March 2022 against “fake” information about the SMO. Many wondered whether Putin’s goals had changed, and he was signalling this. Others wondered whether Putin was in violation of his own law.
Another point of intense debate was Prigozhin, owner/leader/financier of the Wagner group apparently recruiting fighters in Russian jails to fight AFU. The deal was a 6 months’ contract in exchange for full pardon at the end of the contract. The details of the deal were murky, it has emerged recently that those who signed the contract received said pardon as soon as contract was signed, not at the end, as was believed earlier. It also emerged that the Wagner Group, in addition to infantry and artillery, operated tanks, including modern T-90s, and had its own airplanes.
Prigozhin does not shy away from Telegram, shares a “strong Russia” viewpoint with Kadyrov (Head of Chechen Republic), and dishes out criticism as he sees fit. Some are concerned that he is either positioning himself as the next potential leader after Putin, or is being positioned as such, or can become a formidable force in any future power struggle, since he now has a 100K+ military force that is well-equipped and battlefield ready.
Speaking of Prigozhin, Ukraine has its own power struggle between Zelensky and Zaluzhnyj. It appears that Zelensky is setting Zaluzhnyj up to take a fall should AFU suffer a major defeat – Bakhmut/Soledar is the latest example of their difference of opinion, where Zelensky wants to see the town held at all costs, and Zaluzhnyj is forced to waste his troops to defend a town with ever diminishing value. Zaluzhnyj has been making rounds in the Western MSM recently, and, according to some pundits, is being positioned to take Zelensky on in the next presidential elections (or to be a strong backer for Zelensky’s opponent). He has the rhetoric down pat.
“All we did when the large-scale aggression started was to implement not only our knowledge, which we already had in 2014, but also the skills and the experience we have gained since then. And the most important experience we had and the one which we have practised almost like a religion is that Russians and any other enemies must be killed, just killed, and most importantly, we should not be afraid to do it. And this is what we are doing.”
Finally, I leave you with this gem of the Ukrainian propaganda. This is a Bible (not joking, with Nazi symbols and all), that has been printed in Kiev. It claims to be “The first Holy Bible containing blood of true living martyrs”. It is printed with ink with added blood. I am not making this up.
