Digital currency, to me, does not meet portable (Spain blackout anyone), acceptable (can’t spend everywhere) and scarce (mining continues without limits). I don’t know if this makes me a luddite or just traditionalist.
USD, AUD, EUR, etc. also have problems with scarcity, which makes these currencies fiat money. I have gained an understanding of the current monetary system from the book by G. Edward Griffin. Highly recommend. It is geared towards Federal Reserve and USD, but some points made can be applied to RBA and AUD.

One thing occurred to me, though. In my personal journey, I have invested in a few things – gold miners, other shares, ETFs, options (but not digital currency). None of those I held in my hand (non-tangible), and I invested for the purpose to convert these instruments back into fiat currency of choice.
I saved in gold or silver. Gold always in my possession. Silver bars stored in Perth Mint, as it was the most trustworthy institution I could find. Yes, there were times when I had to sell my bullion, but those were reasons other than take profit from an asset that increased in value (or limit loss if decreased). Sold gold to buy a house (another tangible asset), sold silver to finalise divorce (not tangible but so very peaceful).
And I could hold both in my hand. You know, a 100-oz silver bar makes a fine door stop or paper weight.
So that’s me. I just don’t see present day investments as investments in the classic meaning of the word – ROI or dividend. To me, chucking some AUD on a stock or bitcoin is the same as chucking $100 on a roulette table, but in the latter case the outcome is almost instantaneous. And if you are in Vegas, you get free drinks, so a dividend, instead of trading fees on your losing position in the stock market.

Not sure anything’s that clear cut right now.

my take is that if covid is responsible for screwing the pooch market, it’s most likely in the same way that it has other things – money printing and inflation.
