However, once that is done, how will people value one another?
Even in small hunter gatherer tribes, everyone has to contribute. In “The World until Yesterday” anthropologist Jared Diamond describes a number of such peoples. He describes women sent to give birth alone so that if they died they wouldn’t upset the group. He decribes nomadic groups who simply keep moving regardless of whether the old ones can keep up. They are abandoned.
Most of the people we see and interact with every day have no direct value to us. The reason we tolerate their presence is because they represent no immediate threat, and because we assume that we are all part of a society of people working to provide value to one another. Everyone has to contribute.
If there is to be no work that people can do for one another that has more value that what a robot can do, what might happen? Here are some possiblities for the future of value:
- While the labour required to add value will be much much cheaper, materials required will not. Commodities will retain value. I expect that there will be a significant drop in prices at first, but this will stablise once the labour component is repriced.
- There will no argument that immigration is a useful thing. Migrant labour will be unnecessary. Perhaps this will lead to ethnic cleansing in various places. People will value their own more. Tourism might be restricted.
- The cost of housing and energy should come down relative to everything else. Bots will mine, process materials and build and maintain.
The future of value will be determined in large part by what happens to birth, sex and death, because the number of people is the ultimate determiner of demand and in the absense of supply bottlenecks, prices.

Kurzweil also predicted that thanks to medical advances driven by AI, immortality will be achieveable by 2030. This might seem far fetched, but certainly there will be significant medical advances to treat aging, and these will extend the length and quality of life. If that happens, there will be more downward pressure on birth rates.
Huxley’s prediction was that people would have sex primarily for entertainment and bonding rather than reproduction. Reproduction in the Brave New World was totally artificial and strictly quality controlled.
Life is reproduction, selection and evolution. Life, however, has no use for creatures that can choose comfort over life. The future will belong, as it always has, to those who reproduce. Is it possible that AI will create an opening for a surge in reproduction, like rabbits arriving in Australia, such that the bots can’t produce enough?

I think that the LLM tech is potentially very useful, but I don’t believe that it can be regarded as “intelligence” as humans understand the term, and I don’t think it ever will be. There’s a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing in AI land right now.
From what I’ve been able to determine, the problem of “hallucinations” aka “garbage out” aka “wrong answers” is inherent to the current tech, and can’t be solved by scaling up the amount of compute power applied to the problem.
When looking at the AI output from Google searches, I often see results that are either a bit wrong to completely wrong. If that’s the best that one of the biggest companies in the world can do, then the current state of AI can only be described as embarrassingly shit.
I spent 30 years of my career working on mission critical and safety critical military systems. If my work products had been as bad as those of current AI systems I wouldn’t have lasted a day on the job.
I greatly fear that the brazillions of dollars invested in AI won’t produce the expected profits, and that there is going to be a world of hurt when the markets finally reach the same conclusion.
Eventually, all the clouds of FUD will blow away, and AI as currently implemented will find its place in the world, but it won’t be AGI and it won’t be by 2030.
It’ll be interesting to see how well that prediction ages.

I asked AI to extract and process data for me late last year. It couldn’t do it, but it could give me python code that would do it. The code worked without debugging. Earlier AI coding efforts I’d tried required considerable debugging. I was impressed. Now running the code and testing it is all part of the platform. You won’t even know what it’s doing if you miss the message flashing up on the screen.
The improvements are not driven by underlying architectural change on the LLM, but instead through what I call metaliniguistic engineering. I.e. using the LLMs to disect the prompts and then process the different elements through more specialised and fine tuned AIs, which are themselves front ends of the same underlying LLMs. People started working on that sort of thing almost as soon as chatGPT came out. The results are hugely impressive IMO.
The underlying LLM neural nets do not learn on the fly, and the architectures haven’t changed. They are still fundamentally feed foward. Layers of abstraction ape some important aspects of cognition, including feedback loops. Setting up checking protocols has helped enormously with output quality. They are not brains.
The boundaries of these new approaches have yet to be found. I have no doubt that there will still be uses for human brains for a while. The ablility to construct real time mission critical systems may require human brains. I don’t know. I’ve never tried to build one…but you should. Sign up for Claude code and see what you can get it to deliver. I reckon if it can build a c compiler from scratch given a single prompt, it can do what you used to do. If so it might even be fun to come out of retirement.
Like I said, they’re potentially very useful. My wife uses a specifically trained AI at her work, and finds it quite helpful.
But in general terms, there are still problems. For example…

What if you screw up, and accidentally kill some of the good guys? Not a good outcome.
After decades in that line of work the relief from the enormous stress and pressure is such that I have no desire to ever get back into the game. I now have golf to cause me stress and pressure. 🙂
The biggest efforts are going into software Dev AI because that’s going to save big tech money. They already have checking loops built in. Specialised legal AI will too. The incident probably occurred some months ago and the lawyer probably used a free AI.

A lot of AI programming is built around curve surfaces, which is why NVDIA became the biggest company in the world by accident. It was a company started by Nerds who wanted better graphic card simulators, and a lot of Graphic programming is built around curve equations (you are effectively creating 3D surfaces through multiple curve probabilities), which require specialised chips, which lo and behold, is the same coding process used by AI.
On of the problems with this though, is that AI programs can get trapped in local minima or localised depressions before they reach the correct lower state… think of a decision process running down hill and getting stuck in a depression that gradually fills up into a lake, instead of running all the way down to the bottom of the hill and answering the question.
That said, I’m pretty impressed with the rate of acceleration in terms of its coding ability, although I’m not sure if I would want to trust my life to it yet. The thought of autonomous AI with autonomous kill settings chills me to the bone, but it is certainly making amazing leaps in the basic coding space and has the dual potential of unlocking heaps of productivity while eliminating whole swaths of IT jobs.
12 months ago I tried getting ChatGP to help with some excel macros and formula – it was complete garbage. Tried Copilot the other day and it let me write up some VB like I was a pro, built formula with about 4-5 layers of regression/nesting.
Those Pajeet coders we are importing are going to be stuck in their Day Care Centre roles – I am sure that is a relief for any aspiring parents looking at turning towards the day care centers in coming years.
